Naga Chaitanya has somewhat good run at box office with movies like ‘Manam’ and ‘Oka Laila Kosam’ recently. Director Sudhir Varma’s debut flick ‘Swamy Ra Ra’ is a runaway hit. How about his combination at box office now? That’s what ‘Dochay’ is.
The CONTENT:
Chandu (Naga Chaitanya) learns through lessons of life that only those who cheat could earn more. To help his sister become doctor, he turns conman leading a gang of friends. He falls in love at first sight with Meera (Kriti Sanon), an MBBS student who loves bunking college and watching movies. Meanwhile ruthless don Manikyam (Posani) organises a syndicate to loot money and amasses huge wealth. To help his jailed father come out, Chandu ends up looting a big booty related to Manikyam. At the same time Police CI (Ravibabu) is after Chandu to get a hand on that money. Will Chandu escape from Manikyam and Police CI before bringing his father out? That forms rest of story.
The EFFORT:
On-Screen:
Naga Chaitanya has changed a lot. All this time somewhat he is unable to cross that barrier of teen and go matured, but now he altered everything. He looks cool and terrific sometimes, with changed mannerisms and style. However, he needs to learn to bring depth to even empty scenes.
Posani Krishanamurali’s role of Manikyam needs appreciation. Trying hand at comedy villiany, he looks fun, rib ticking and the same time clinical with performance. Next mention is “Tempting Star” Bullet Babu, aka Brahmanandam, who delivers best again. Barring few dull moments, his character has come out well.
Heroine Kriti Sanon has a limited role, but she looked gorgeous and did her part decently. It’s Ravi Babu who steals the show again with his nutty gritty acts. He slightly underrated by Tollywood for sure. Madhurima’s glamour in Aanati Devdasu song will not fill hunger of B&C fans.
Off-Screen:
Director Sudhir Varma has once again picked a crime-comedy, like his debut film Swamy Ra Ra. Probably for that reason, there is lot of hangover of that flick in Dochay too. While he is able to design fantastic twists, somehow screenplay is not racy and engaging. Apart from slapstick comedy, he needs to extract other types of performance from the artists. Otherwise, this young director is too good in handling crime comedies.
A big let down has come up in the form of music director MR Sunny. While his background score is decent, none of the songs hooked audiences to seats. Somehow many tunes brought the nostalgic feel of listening to ‘Swamy Ra Ra’ music again.
Richard Prasad’s cinematography impressed yet again. Bike chase sequences and another parkour & free-running action sequence is quite stylish like we see in typical Hollywood flicks. Action choreographers Peter Hein and Kecha deserve a pat.

BREAKDOWN:
To play safe, no doubt Sudhir Varma has chosen some cinematic liberties and stuffed it with regular masala for another crime comedy. Like in the case of Swamy Ra Ra, here’s also a target, a romance, a misunderstood crime and a slapstick cat-mouse chase. And this time, the comedy dose got better in climax.
As movie starts, introduction of characters takes time and slowly it gets into the story. More than Chaitu’s conman acts and his gang’s slapstick comedy, it’s Chaitu’s romance with Kriti that glues us. Sudhir Varma extracted a beautiful love tract yet again, and gives some butterflies. As Ravibabu enters as corrupt cop taking share from Chaitu’s hard earned bounties, it gets interesting. As Posani runs a crime syndicate of looting money, the villainy gets humorous. But what’s new? As this graph gets little bored, a parkour running chase brings excitement. Till now, there is no connect between Chaitu and Posani, and interval comes abruptly. Not a bang, not a punch, but a pause to forthcoming action sequence.
As second half starts, a chase dives us into film but yet almost 20 minutes sound slow and dull. That’s where the graph takes downward dip. Momentum has picked up once Brahmi entered as Tempting Star obviously making reference to a super star. Some cinematic twists in screenplay bring fire, and Posani Brahmi and Saptgari for a few minutes took graph to all new level. A good climax somehow saved the dull second half.
While tackling a commercial drama with a star hero, certain scenes need to have exaggeration and screenplay should be tight. But this con comedy thriller worked only in parts and there are certain gaps. However, a comedy climax might cast any unexpected magical spell at box office.
